Redfern on the southern end of the Sydney "CBD" is slated to be redeveloped as a fringe part of the city. We originally campaigned to save the Rocks, Circular quay area from being swallowed up as part of the CBD.
The current issues are abouts local parks and community facilities. Both Prince Alfred Park (gateway park between Central Station and Redfern suburb) and Redfern Park have large sports facilities in them - that have little to do with people in the area. The State Labor Govt had Sydney City XCouncil swallow up South Sydney Council - so that interests of local Redfern residents are being lost.
(Prince) Alfred Park is currently being "renewed" - ie Sydney City Council is rejigging the pathways and changing the seating (like they did with Redfern Park to mask the fact that they were increasing thesize of the redeveloped "oval"). We are campaigning to have the pool closed in Alfred Park as a new one is opening in George St Redfern - and Alfred Park needs to be expanded as a space for community festivals - with a garden latyout.
The President of the UPE through which WITAR got some local Council funding, is also the Founder and Director of WITAR and Save Our Sydney (both of which for a long time have been projects of the UPE)
